Magnificent Sevens...

Helensburgh's quest for an unprecedented fourth piece of silverware fell at the final hurdle at the club's Sevens tournament last Saturday. On a blustery, cool day 12 teams from around the country competed for the Shield though the holders GHK's late, late withdrawal meant a hasty gathering of willing squad players from the host club, Loch Lomond and Clydebank, to form the Nomads and keep the four-group format as planned.

After the group matches, the teams split into competing for the Shield and the Bowl, with Glasgow University, Greenock, Helensburgh and the Mighty Hills looking sharp and on form. In the end, it was old rivals Greenock who won through to face the hosts in the main final, where their streetwise sevens' nous earned them a comfortable victory, their second in four years. In the Bowl final, sponsors' team The Royal Bar defeated regular co-opted team WUSA in a thrilling match.

Knockout Results: Shield quarter-finals - Helensburgh 38 Clydebank 14; Mighty Hills 28 Allan Glens 14; Glasgow Uni 46 Loch Lomond 0; Greenock 43 Currie 7. Sem-finals - Helensburgh 21 Mighty Hills 19; Glasgow Uni 12 Greenock 22. Final - Helensburgh 5 Greenock 26.

Bowl semi-finals - WUSA 39 Nomads 0; President's VII 10 Royal Bar 36; Final - WUSA 14 Royal Bar 27.

A big thanks to all the clubs who attended and to everyone else who made the day a fitting finale to a superb season.

Treble is in the bag!

From the moment the players were cheered on to their bus on Friday night, you sensed something special was happening.

Around 100 people turned up at Michael Curley’s Buffet Shop to see the team off – the sense of anticipation was palpable and a few of the players confessed to welling up. That was as nothing to the tears that flowed come 1.40pm on Saturday at Murrayfield.

The ebb and flow of emotion throughout the Bowl final climaxed with the loudest cheer of the day within the venerable old stadium: a fact the SRU confirmed later when agreeing that Helensburgh probably took more supporters through than any of the other five teams taking part in National Finals Day.

A fleet of six buses and countless others, on the train, by car… no one was going to miss this one. It was a bit like an old school reunion with former comrades-in-arms greeting each other ecstatically both before and after the game. It wasn’t a classic game – finals rarely are – but it was a classic occasion for the Burgh, an epic adventure, a journey that might likely never be repeated. You never know…

Helensburgh RFC would like to thank every single supporter who has contributed to the club’s best-ever season, one without equal in their 48-year history. That’s every player, former player, committee member, helper, supporter and sponsor. We all pulled on one great big green jersey on Saturday – on what was an extra, extra large day for the club.
